He also talked about how his friends, including Katherine Heigl, have become parents recently and that becoming a father is something he would like to do but doesn’t know if it will work out.

Ellen has been a long-time fan and supporter of the show and always has the eliminated contestants on her program.  When the rest of the world was shocked when young Josiah Leming was cut from the show without even making the finals, she had him on and showered him with gifts that could help him further his music career.

Besides, her foray into reality show judging on So You Think You Can Dance proved that she could not only provide useful feedback but could be funny and entertaining at the same time.

I think that a lot of American Idol fans, as well as her audience on Ellen will be tuning in just to see what kind of job she does but I really believe that, if Paula Abdul was really going to be replaced, Ellen was a smart choice. 

She’s so different from Paula so there won’t be any comparisons but she’s also got that compassion that the contestants need.

Simon Fuller, the creator and executive producer of American Idol, released the following statement: "I could not be more excited to have Ellen join the ‘American Idol’ family.  Ellen has been a fan of the show for many years, and her love of music and understanding of the American public will bring a unique human touch to our judging panel. I can’t wait for this next season to begin."

Of course, Ellen took an opportunity to have a little fun and, after the dancers did their individual entrances she asked the group if they remembered the choreography that she had taught them.  What happened next totally surprised me (and should really embarrass Katie Holmes for her lacklustre performance on the show).

I wasn’t surprised at all to see that the Tyra Banks Show won the “informative” talk show award since she is constantly trying to push the envelope to educate her viewers whether it’s a giant stuffed vagina or having pregnant prostitutes on the show to tell their stories.  She really has carved out a niche for herself and I’m really happy for her.

The Rachael Ray show won the “entertainment” talk show prize and I have to say that I was a little surprised by it but, then again, I’m continually amazed by this show’s success.  I didn’t think it was even going to last a single season but, here it is, winning awards!

I was stunned, however, when the ladies on The View beat out Ellen DeGeneres for “best talk show host” after Ellen dominated the category for the past four years.  You know she’s at home right now wondering what she did wrong (nothing!).  I think that viewers really connected with the discussions surrounding the 2008 US Presidential Elections on The View and that probably helped them capture the prize.

So You Think You Can Dance

I know that Ellen loves to dance so I’m really looking forward to what she has to say.  I know she’ll be funny but I’m hoping she will actually have some constructive criticism for the dancers. 

Yes, I realize that she’s not a dance instructor but she does know a lot about entertaining and audience and that’s just as important as having good technique!  I hope she dances all the way to judges table.

Ellen will be guest judging the Top 8 on Wednesday, July 22 on Fox .  If you’d also like to see Katie Holmes,  she’ll be performing on the results show on July 23.

I’m so excited!!!  Are you going to watch?!

You know, we’ve seen recently in the press how many kids have killed themselves because of being bullied and teased at school. And so whenever there’s somebody that is successful and talented and happy and openly gay, I think that sends a really positive message for all these kids out there that are struggling.”

I agree with Ellen.  She has broken down barriers by being openly gay even though the admission likely played a role in the cancellation of her sitcom.  I think that there are a lot of people who will benefit from the courage of these celebrities who come out of the closet and I’m glad to see that a veteran like Ellen is showing her support for Adam.

While speaking with AOL’s Inside/TV, the talk show host said:  “No, I don’t think we’re going to have kids.  We have animals, and we love them. They don’t talk back, and they don’t explore their vocal chords out in public. [Portia's] brother and his wife just had a baby girl who’s a month old now, and it’s fun to be a part of that. But no, I think, you know, we definitely thought about it. And it’s something I think most people, as a relationship goes on, explore. But it’s just a huge responsibility, and I don’t know that that’s something we want to take on. We’re very happily married without children.”

It feels like there’s a been a baby boom for a while in Hollywood and I’m beginning to wonder if celebs like Rachael, Oprah and Ellen will inspire a “childless” phase in Tinseltown.  Anyway, I’m glad that these couples are choosing to do what makes them happy and not what they feel they should do to blend in with society.

Ellen and her wife, Portia de Rossi, are still legally married under the ruling (they wed last August) but she had the following to say: “I’m sure you heard the Prop 8 news. One day when everyone is treated with full equality, we’ll look back and realize how wrong this was,” Ellen said in a statement to Access Hollywood.

Lance Bass, the openly gay former member of N*SYNC echoed in a written statement: “I can only hope to one day live in a country that grants equal rights, opportunity, and freedom to all citizens.”  For more celeb reactions, visit the Access Hollywood site.
