Is Oprah Giving Unhealthy Advice?
June 3, 2009 by Jeanne
The Early Show aired a segment that basically questioned whether Oprah Winfrey was dishing out advice on her talk show that is potentially harmful to her over 40 million viewers. CBS News correspondent Michelle Miller pointed to an investigative report in this week’s issue of Newsweek magazine, which specifically questions the "Oprah Effect."
I guess it is important to look at what Oprah says on her show since she really does have a lot of influence. I can think of three things ((the Neti Pot, Acai berry and rolf therapy), right off the top of my head, that I tried just because I saw it on Oprah and I trust her. I will also admit that I didn’t even look up whether these things were actually good for me because I believed Oprah wouldn’t recommend something that was dangerous. What an obedient little sheep!
Anyway, the Newsweek article claims that Oprah “has managed to validate health claims that most people would call "real crackpot ideas.’” The senior editor of the publication told CBS News: "Some of the advice she gives, especially with regard to health and medicine, is not good advice. Sometimes the advice guests give on the show could actually hurt you."
Among the things that they named were Jenny McCarthy’s theories about about the link between vaccinations and autism as well as the assertion that hormone replacement therapy can keep you young (according to Suzanne Somers). The problem, Newsweek says, is that viewers are not given all of the information to make an informed decision. I guess I could see that point.
Oprah had a response to the criticism: "For 23 years, my show has presented thousands of topics that reflect the human experience, including doctors’ medical advice and personal health stories that have prompted conversations between our audience members and their health care providers…I trust the viewers, and I know that they are smart and discerning enough to seek out medical opinions to determine what may be best for them."
What do you think? Is Oprah being reckless with her health advice?

I have no idea who’s going to win for Outstanding Talk Show. It’s quite a close match, so it should be interesting to see who takes it!

Mother/Daughter Fashion Tips on Early Show
April 23, 2009 by Jeanne
Sherrie Mathison the author of Steal This Style was on the CBS Early Show where she gave some great tips for looking fabulous at any age.
Her book is broken down in to sections like “Never Cool” and “Forever Cool” and I think that’s a great idea. To demonstrate the lesson, she had some large “before” pictures that were shown before the real-life model walked out on the set.
Not to be mean but my main problem with this segment was what Sherrie, herself, was wearing but I will ignore it since her advice was okay. I also wasn’t crazy about the colors chosen for the first older woman’s fashion (the pants were not very flattering either). The work clothes were pretty nice, though.

Obama Talks to Katie Couric on Early Show
November 3, 2008 by Jeanne
This morning, Senator Barack Obama spoke with Katie Couric on the Today show where he explained his feelings surrounding the revelation that his aunt is here from Kenya without proper immigration papers and the “low blow” he felt was dealt to his wife by the Republican party.
“I do believe there is a Republican or right-wing media outlet, or set of media outlets, that went after my wife for a while in a way that I thought was just completely out of bounds,” Obama said. “Frankly, I would never have considered or expected my allies to do something comparable to the spouse of an opponent. I just feel like family are civilians.”
What happened? Not only did people begin referring to his wife, Michelle, as “Obama’s baby mama,” (thank Fox News for that little gem) and “Mrs. Grievance” (National Review) but they also took a comment she made and, I feel, blew it way out of proportion. She said that for the first time in her adult life, she was “proud of [her] country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback.” What’s wrong with that?
I was able to get my hands on a short video of Obama talking about his aunt’s illegal immigrant status. In short, he would support deporting her. What do you think of that?
Cast of High School Musical on Early Show
October 22, 2008 by Jeanne
Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale (who I see is now a brunette!) and Corbin Bleu, who you may recognize from the hugely successful Disney-produced High School Musical series of films were on the CBS Early Show where they talked about the third and final installment. I have to admit, I avoided these movies like the plague every time my kids watched them and, finally, on a particularly weak evening, my husband and I gave into pressure to give them a chance. Now, he and I are as eager to see the third movie as the kids. The only bummer is that the first two films were shown on the Disney Channel while this one will be shown in theatres. I hate going to the movies since I can’t pause, rewind or talk out loud (unless I’m seeing some major blockbuster) and the cost is so prohibitive. Oh well. I will have to suck it up and enjoy a night out as a family

Is It Okay to Spy on Your Spouse?
October 6, 2008 by Jeanne
The CBS Early Show talked about whether it is okay to read the email or check the voicemail of your spouse. They spoke to a couple and the husband made a good point - you can check it but if your spouse is going to cheat, they are going to find a way. You may not be able to prevent it no matter how much you try (or pry).
They also talked about what you should do if you are caught snooping - be honest and explain that you were feeling suspicious (if that is the case!) and you didn’t feel comfortable talking to them directly. That is a tough call for me, though, because I wonder if it’s a good sign that a husband/wife feels too uncomfortable to talk to their spouse…. anyway, the segment is entertaining:
Golfer Anthony Kim on the Early Show
August 20, 2008 by Jeanne
Anthony Kim dropped by The Early Show where he played a little golf with some young fans. I’m not a huge follower of the sport but he seems like a pretty nice guy. For more golf news, visit Green Posse.
