Whoopi Goldberg to Produce Stage Version of "Sister Act" in London

Whoopi Goldberg is getting back in the "habit" (yes, that painful pun was intended).  Reports are saying that the moderator from The View will be producing a stage version of her highly successful 1992 film Sister Act.  "I really liked the direction they were going in," Goldberg said. "It (the film) is almost 20 years old. Rather than have someone repeat what was, you have to take it and redo it. That’s what they’ve done and they’ve done it really well."  

Whoopi also gave some insight about the show and some of the changes that have been made in order to adapt it from the film version:  "The show is fun, it’s not boring. And if I’m not bored, I’m your pal.  She (the singer) still is a woman running away . . . hidden away with all those nuns, a fish out of water. But she is not as old as I am or was at the time (the movie was filmed). So she has a lot of decisions to make, more decisions to make than my character had. So it will be fun to watch. I’m excited."

The musical is currently scheduled to open on June 2, 2009 at the London Palladium but preview performances will be starting on May 6, 2008.  So far, there is no news about casting.

I really loved both the original Sister Act and the sequel so I hope the musical does them justice!
