Elisabeth Hasselbeck Disses Michelle Obama
September 9, 2008 by Jeanne
Did Elisabeth Hasselbeck cross the line? Recently, at a luncheon for the Republican National Convention, The View co-host told the crowd that Cindy McCain arrived as a guest on the show without a list of topics she couldn’t talk about “unlike another wife” of a politician who is running for president. She’s obviously talking about Michelle Obama and some people feel that she went too far. I wonder how she would feel if someone went to the Democratic convention and talked about the fact that, unlike Cindy, Michelle isn’t a recovering drug addict…
Well, I don’t know what to say about her comments but I do know that if I were a guest on the show, I would no longer feel safe about what is said behind-the-scenes. I think her actions are pretty unprofessional.
CNN discussed the controversy. Watch the video and tell me what you think!

Hasselbecks comments were totally out of line. That behaviour shouldnt be tolerated after Ms Obama was a guest on The View. I think EH should be chastised and told to rein it in. She does the republicans no favours with her histrionics and shrill outbursts. This latest display just demonstrates further that she shouldnt be given the oh so public opportunity to air her ‘View.’
Shrill, lib term in regards to anyone outside thier bias. Ciny’s past issues have less to do with current affairs than Michelle’s current view’s since the latter has zero potential to impact American life and the latter has serious potential for impact. Your defense of MO wanting to make open banter off limits shows your bias, afraid she has something to hide?
Elisabeth should be stopped, c’mon Barbara, do something! Elisabeth spreads her negativity around day after day. I will not watch the show anymore, gone are the days where opinions are discussed in a respectful, adult way. Tsk, tsk, Ms. Hasselbeck.
I disagree about Cindy’s past having no impact on current affairs. The wife of a president is his backbone.
The other thing to note is that we have NO IDEA what Michelle Obama asked them not to discuss. I’m sure if she had something major to hide, some reporter would have already dug it up. It’s not like “The View” was going to break some story about something we didn’t already know.
Regardless of whether you are Democrat or Republic, it’s totally inappropriate to use information you are privy to at your job in a political forum. Just isn’t professional, in my view.
Michelle Obama asked that they not speak about the children while on the View. Imagine a candidate acutally keeping her kids out of the race for the white house instead of using them as PR tools and then playing the victim when the press and public ask questions about them.
Before we get into the “proud of America” stuff, first of all, did you like Michelle Obama today?
HASSELBECK: I did. We had a mutual respect for one another. Like we said on the show it’s interesting that just because your politics are quite different.
COLMES: Right.
HASSELBECK: And obviously she has a little bit more personally invested in this election than I do, that you couldn’t have a conversation about the kids or what it means to you to get up in the morning, want to get a run-in so you get your stress out and you can deal with the stress of the rest of your day.
COLMES: Right.
HASSELBECK: I mean we have great respect for one another.
“Cindy came into our hair and makeup room, fresh as can be, and unlike another wife of a political candidate who shall remain nameless, she didn’t come with a list of topics that we weren’t allowed to touch. Nope, that’s because she has nothing to hide.”
I find it offensive, innuendo like that always is. It is also cowardly to hide behind that innuendo. It shows that Hasselback can’t be trusted, and future guests will have to weigh this before going on the show.
Sincerely,
Martha Davidson
Yes it was!! And it doesn’t matter whether republican or democrat. Had that been Whoopi commenting on Cindy that would have been wrong as well.
Sorry to break it to ya, but they DID discuss Obama’s kids in the interview with Michelle O. There must have been some other juicy topics that they “couldn’t discuss” with her! At least Cindy McCain has gone public with her drug problem. Why aren’t we asking why Barack hasn’t discussed his past drug use as well?
It’s not about whether a person has something to hide or not, in this case Michelle Obama or Cindy McCain. For me it’s a matter of professional delivery and class. I expect a speech by McCain, Palin, Obama, or Biden to have a few political shots here and there.
However, when a person is asked to MC a luncheon, it should be considered a great honor and approached with class and dignity. So regardless of how Michelle or Cindy are at home, publically they both seem like dignified classy women. So they should be treated with a certain degree of respect. My personal opinion is that Elisabeth cheapened herself with the comment, especially since she has appeared to get along great with Michelle when they were on The View together.
Hasselbeck can conduct herself anyway she likes, however I see a public person as being somewhat like a cop or teacher. We seem to expect a certain level of dignity in the behavior exhibited by such public figures. She could have simply introduced Cindy McCain and stated in a classy manner that Cindy was so open and was game for anything by not bringing off bound questions with her WITHOUT the innuendo. It would have got her point across but in a classy, professional manner. It was disappointing to myself as a conservative. Frankly I feel embarrassed for her. Very immature.
I share a name with you , elizabeth , but thats all I do share ! Is it just me that thinks this ? are all the republican women like the Stepford Wives ? What a bunch of narrow minded, selfrightious rednecked idiots you are!! Who the hell gives you the right to say who is patriotic, a good American . Who gives you the right to say I can’t have an abortion ? Who gives you the right to tell me what is right for my body ? WHO, GIVES YOU THAT RIGHT ?? Take care of your own life ! I will make a decision myself ! Go back to your fascist life, and leave people to be free without shoving your 100 year old ideas down everyone else’s throat !! GET IT ?? Now go kill some poor wildlife and then tell the voters you believe in the bible. I think somewhere in there Jesus agrees with me, “thou shalt not kill”
BKoi
You are very passionate.
What makes you think Elisabeth is a true Christian? If you are not a follower of Christ, how would you be able to detect one who is authentic from one that is not? Even Christians can be deceived.
Just a thought.
I am pro-LIFE. I may try to dissuade you in a caring manner. But the final decision is between you and God. At least, that’s the God I know. So I can’t bang you over the head to convince you on your abortion stance. You would have to make the decision in your own heart. Hopefully you wouldn’t; it’s a very traumatic, life-changing experience. I suppose it’s the same with trying to bang someone over the head for killing wildlife – for food not sport. Some will eat for food. Some will abstain.
Take care.
You may, or may not, be interested to know there are differences in the Bible between what God says about killing versus murdering.
BKoi,
Resorting to name calling is, unfortunately, typical of folks with your mindset. I am a registered nurse who has witnessed the abortion procedure. It is an inhumane act. If people could actually see what happens during an abortion that results in the ending of a human life (whether you believe life starts at conception or not), most, if not all, would rethink this stance. It is life-changing. It’s a decision one needs to live with the rest of her life.
And, if one of the poor little creatures had actually survived the abortion procedure, Obama voted against giving it any medical care. Shame on him.
EH is not an angel in terms of defending her party. She won’t admit anything bad or wrong doing of her party and disses out about the democrat. Obviously she is totally biased when giving out her views. Besides, she is too bitchy when she talks.
Well I want to discuss the actual issue. Elizabeth Hasselbeck had no right to discuss behind the scene topics had that luncheon. Michelle Obama is a great person and I can see now that Elizabeth hasselbeck is fake. She put on a front with her on the show and chose to use her kindness for weakness. That’s how some poeple are. When you are in a position there are certain ways that you should act whether you are on your show or anywhere. Whatever Michelle asked them not to discuss should have been exactly that. NOT DISCUSSED! Elizabeth is very dirty and slick in my eyes. She is lower than a snake to me for trying to demean a woman who may very well be the First Lady of the United States. There’s just a certain level of respect and I feel that Barbara or anyone who’s in charge should reprimand her. Back to the abortion, regardless of what laws you pass or how you feel or what you say ultimately people will do what they want to do. If people want to abort that’s what they’ll do. It’s not our business what they do because we can’t put them in a heaven or hell. We should focus on letting people do what they want to do because ultimately they will. BOTTOM LINE: Elizabeth Hasselbeck was wrong and what goes around comes around. God doesn’t like ugly! Let people do them. Let them determine what they want to do with their babies. And don’t ever put shame on Obama if that’s the way he feels then that’s his opinion. Everyone is entitled to it, even presidential candidates. Like it, Love it, Learn from it…
Elisabeth H is the worst talk show host ever!! Her approach to questions and sad sad political commentary make her very painful to listen to each day. If it weren’t for the other ladies on The View, she’d have driven me away long ago. She’s just a bit of an airhead!
Well, KJ Jackson, I believe Michelle can put shame on Obama for wanting to deny medical care to an aborted infant who survived. If he feels this way, then it DOES reflect on his basic moral character.
I do not want someone with this type of character in charge of making decisions in this wonderful country of which we are so lucky to be a part.
We’re losing track of what made this country so great in the first place–moral thinking, free speech, freedom to work and improve our lives, etc. When we begin to allow the indifferent killing of our citizens, how are we any different than other countires where this has been allowed (Russia, Iraq, etc)? People need to see the REAL suffering that is occurring in other countries and hopefully learn to really appreciate what we take for granted.
There is nothing real about Elisabeth..her voice is irritating and not everyone has to buy expensive clothes. As for abortion there is nothing wrong in it as long as its for rape and incest..not to be forced to have a child that your are going to hate and turn into a monster..beating ..torturing..until they grow up to kill people..The country of uours is full of those..I`m sure Barack has morals to run your country..If I was president i would make sure to throw you and mccain out of it
Kathy,
You are a prime example of people who want to live in a perfect world. In a perfect world people would want their children, and there would be no need for abortion. However, we don’t live in a perfect world. PEOPLE ARE GOING TO DO WHAT THEY WANT TO DO! BOTTOM LINE! If Senator Obama feels this way, then it’s on him, however I don’t think this limits his ability to run this “wonderful country”. As we can see he has several plans for the country and getting it back on track.
You said, “People need to see the REAL suffering that is occurring in other countries and hopefully learn to really appreciate what we take for granted.”
Real suffering is a family who doesn’t have food because gas prices are so high. Real suffering is car dealerships going bankrupt because no one can afford to buy cars. Real suffering is 700 billion bailout because the economy is near a depression state. Real suffering is growing up wondering who your family is and why they didn’t want you.
Let us learn how to focus on living in the true U.S. The country is wonderful yes, but it has its flaws that need to be fixed and Barack Obama is the change that we need. Regardless of his plans for abortion, he is still the best candidate. I didn’t even discuss Michelle Obama saying anything, so I really don’t understand where that came from, Kathy, but I’m standing by my candidate. I’m standing by my opinion abut Elizabeth Hasselbeck. I don’t support abortion, but I know taht ultimately whether I support it or not, it will go on. Because a woman could throw herself down a flight of stairs and lose a baby. It wasn’t abortion, but the baby’s gone. Let people live their own lives and pay for their own mistakes and don’t low rate a potential president because he can see that they are still gonna do what they want to. Kathy, look around and you’ll see who has morals and who doesn’t. Have you gone and adopted a child? Have you went and mentored a child? These are things you have to do when a mom doesn’t want her child.
I hate seeing children grow up without families and I think that growing up without a father has made me that way. Children don’t ask to be here and should we make them suffer because of a one night stand.
Again, LET PEOPLE DO THEM! THEY AHVE TO MAKE THEIR OWN DECISIONS AND REGARDLESS OF RULES, LAWS, OR REGULATIONS THEY WILL FIND A WAY TO DO WHAT THEY WANT TO….
LIKE IT, LOVE IT, LEARN FROM IT….
Why won’t Elisabeth Hasselbeck just go away?
KJ Jackson,
If Obama wins, let’s revisit all of this in 2 years! The wife is already acting like a princess, as exhibited in the View experience and lately as a prima donna on the campaign trail.
Adoption would be a better option than anything listed above. There is NO law that states a mother has to keep her unwanted child. I know a family that has adopted 5 children, and another that has adopted 3. They waited years on a list to get children, so don’t think that adoption is not an option. The children have a great life and are glad to be alive to enjoy it, as are the adoptive parents.
Financial suffering is NOT real suffering. This is materialistic suffering. Real suffering is starvation, suffering from treatable diseases, rape/ murder without a judicial system to stand for the victims, etc. We don’t know real suffering. You need to visit China, Iran, Darfur, Congo as I have. You wouldn’t last 2 days there.
And, Mary–I think you’re just an American wanna be, like most of the world because we are so lucky and blessed, albeit very spoiled.
E.Hasselbeck is nothing but a hassle. Why she is still on The View is a mystery to me. I wish she would leave. I no longer watch The View because i can’t stand her anymore.Sad, but true! Live, Learn & Love
Elisabeth Hasslebeck is an idiot, and should not be on the View at all. They should remove her with great haste. People don’t want to watch STUPID anymore. I have personally had quite enough of it with Bush in the last 8 years, and with McCain and his little ploy that backfired. You betcha. Now that the election is over, and the country is finally in capable hands, all of the religious fanatics should fall to their knees and praise God, for giving us Barack Obama as our next President. What Ms. HASSLEbeck eluded to was that THESE people have things they are not prepared to discuss with the public at this time, which MUST mean they have things to hide. Just because Michelle Obama has normal boundaries, and is unlikely to run her mouth like most addicts are willing to do, does not mean that Ms H. should be allowed to infer that something sinister is being hidden. I think Ms. H. and Rush Limbaugh should do a show together, where they can have their little hatefest. On a major network of course,
so they can be voted out (canceled) for their lack of merit. Maybe they could have the McCains, and Palins on for their first guests. What fun! In Ms Hasslebeck’s case, it would give her a chance to spout her drivel among her peers. I wish Rush Limbaugh could be tried for SOMETHING, after calling Barack Obama a Chicago Thug. But though this was an UNtrue, extremely disrespectful, and unpatriotic thing to say, he seems to enjoy (overmuc) the same right to freedom of speech that we are all allowed as Americans. If he really believes that President-elect Obama is a ”thug” he would not be exercising this right to express his less than intelligent, and spiritually bankrupt views.
EH embodies most of the reasons people outside the US have disdain for it. Land of the free as long as you think like me……She is just sad. How someone can be so ignorant in todays world is beyond me.
For all the folks out there who are glad the Repubs were voted out–let’s revisit this in 1-2 years. By then, we’ll be able to see what this election, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and the other new elects have “COST” us all! I know there’s a lot of Bush haters out there, but we have to give the man credit for keeping us safe since 9/11. I don’t EVER want to have to relive that event. It was horrible–and it seems that most of us have forgotten what it was like. Those people are still out there that want to kill you, your grandma, your child, your dog, etc only because you’re not one of them. I hope Mr. Obama realizes what he’s taken on and what he’s promised everyone. Now that Europe and the dems have gotten their way, be careful what we wish for. Let’s talk in a year……
Does a 9% approval rating ring a bell with anyone? And it’s only going to get worse.
No, McCain wasn’t the answer. But I think anyone with an “R” next to their name didn’t stand a chance. Although we all should realize that this real estate mess started back in the 1970s with Jimmy Carter and his Community Reinvestment Act (aka: forcing banks to loan money to people they knew were horrible risks or face having the FDIC withhold insurance from their banks), which was reinforced in the Clinton era and ignored and perpetuated by many in Congress (M. Waters, Waxman, etc), Bush got the blame. But we also forget that for 6 1/2 years, we all did pretty well. What’s changed in the last 2 years? Does a 9% approval rating ring a bell with anyone?
It’s going to be a rough ride….
And that was a 9% CONGRESSIONAL approval rating….that’s all that’s changed in 2 years.
…It’s all about ratings. People tune in to watch what stupid thing she is gonna say next.
Crystal and Mark said it. Elisabeth has such a lack of political understanding and her ignorance about world affairs is out there for everyone to suffer through.
And someone should really loan that girl a pair of sleeves for the winter season.
Elizabeth Hasselbeck is an imbecile!
Her arguments degenerate to ad homonym attacks routinely.
She doesnt know what she is talking about more often than not.
It appears she has a particular axe to grind against Obama.
Recently she is complaining about Obama having a President Elect seal on the lectern from which he gives speeches.
I guarantee she will complain about him using the Presidential seal post January 2009.
A lot of hate in this person for being a daughter of ethnic parents. I think the mother is Spanish/Italian not fully sure and the father is a Jew!
What went wrong with her?
Cheers
I watched the View today and Barbara made of point of telling all the ladies that they were invited to the White House by Barack and Michelle. Elisabeth was so childish, asking if Barbara was sure she meant her to be included as well. Barbara was serious and just said to Elisabeth they meant all of them and the Obamas had asked about Elisabeth. She is so emotionally immature that she doesn’t understand that not all people hold grudges like she does.
