Jeanne,

I think you should learn more about American Pit Bull Terriers aka "Nanny Dogs" before you make such a statement. Pit bulls are very safe when socialized! I am very knowledgeable and have a lot of experience with pit bulls. Because of this knowledge and experience, I disagree with your comment! They are the most loving dogs you could imagine! I'm a responsible dog owner, and own two pit bulls. I am also a member of a pit bull meet up group. ALL the pit bulls in our group are safe and haven't bitten anyone ever! When a stranger approaches my yard, all my dogs want to do is lick them and be affectionate! Because this breed is good natured and has a loving temperment, they do not make good guard dogs! Pit bulls were not bred to attack people. If they were, they would attack their handlers! People are wrong to blame the breed. If people continue to be prejudiced and judgmental of the breed, more breed specific legislation will be passed. If this legislation is passed, many innocent pit bulls will die. Many responsible dog owners will lose their loving dogs or be forced to pay ridiculous amounts of money to keep them! If you would like to learn more about this breed, please feel free to visit the following sites: www.badrap.org and www.meetup.com/NYC-Pitbull/about/ . If you want to learn true statistics, visit: http://www.atts.org/ . You'll be very surprised by the results! Fact: Opposite of what some people falsely believe about a pit bull's temperament, Pit bulls pass the Temperament Test (ATTS) at almost the exact same percentage rate as Golden Retrievers, 83.5% for Pits and 83.7% for Goldens. They are one of the top breeds in passing the Temperament Test year after year. Border Collies pass at 79%, Chihauhas at 71%, and Daschunds (smooth coat, long hair) at a measly 66%! ARE NO BAD DOGS, ONLY BAD OWNERS! BLAME THE DEED, NOT THE BREED!

Sincerely,
Robbin
Pit bull owner, lover, and advocate!

Last week we rescued a sweet little puppy. My husband didn't tell me she was a pit until after she was ours. I was horrified at first - we have two small children! After hours of research and even more hours of playing with our new sweet girl, I have come to realize that pitbulls make wonderful family pets. She is smart, eager to please, and loves people - especially children. With love and proper training, these dogs are said to be one of the very best breeds for families. They are not prone to barking or nipping. They can handle a toddler poking them in the eye or pulling their tail, in fact they love the attention.

Did you know that in dog fights with pitbulls, all dogs had to do well with people? They were trained to fight other dogs. A stranger had to be able to walk into a fight and pull a dog off the other without being bit. If the dog showed any aggression, it was, at the very least, never allowed to breed, but most often it was put down.

Sorry for my rant. It's been on my mind a lot lately.

Good for Rachael Ray for including pit bulls as a topic on one of her shows. It is true that the situation over pit bulls should not be oversimplified, but truly people need to judge the deed and not the breed. It is important to resist ignorance and to educate and inspire others about the truth about pits and their nature.
