Daniel Day-Lewis on Oprah – Video

January 25, 2008 by Jeanne

image Actor Daniel Day-Lewis was on the Oprah Winfrey Show to talk about the Oscars and Sundance Film Festival but interrupted her because he was so distracted since he only just learned about the death of Heath Ledger.  He did seem very saddened by it and mentioned that he hoped the media would let his family mourn without intrusion.  Kudos to Oprah who improvised when Daniel abruptly changed the subject.

IT CLEARLY PUTS THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE AS MR.LEWIS STATED. OSCARS, AWARDS ETC. . . MEAN NOTHING WHEN WE ARE CONFRONTED WITH OUR MORTALITY ESPECIALLY AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE! LIFE IS PRECIOUS AND TOOO SHORT, EMBRACE EVERYDAY YOU HAVE! GOD BLESS!!

Hi, Im from Perth Australia and really quite pissed and appalled by Oprahs lack of giving a shit. She looked like a real tool. She obviously didn’t want to talk about it and made it very clear. Shame on you Oprah. It was different when she paid Heath a heapof cash to be on the show for Brokeback. Looks like her minds made up on this story…

YEAH YOUR RIGHT TAMMY. ITS DISGUSTING IM FROM CHICAGO AND I HAVE NOTICED A CHANGE IN HER FROM WHEN SHE FIRST STARTED OUT, ITHINK ITS A GOD COMPLEX. ITS TRUE WHAT THEY SAY ALL THE GOOD ONES DIE YOUNG! LIKE I SAID, HE IS DEFINENTLY IN A BETTER PLACE!

I have to say that I really admire Daniel-Day-Lewis’ compassion. He has shown a great sadness towards the passing of Heath Ledger on more than one occasion, it is very honorable. Heath Ledger was an amazing person who will be greatly missed by so many, he was much too young to leave us. As for Oprah seeming to not care, I agree that at the time it may have seemed that way, but she happened to be very fond of Heath Ledger and it was only the day after his death. It is a very touchy issue right now and I think she was trying to avoid making any speculatory comments. No one knows what happened just yet and she was probably trying to avoid voicing an opinion to early. I’m sure that in the near future, she will do some kind of memorial or tribute for him, but it is still slightly premature. I loved Heath Ledger and think he was an incredible person, he does not deserve the disrespect of the media. It is a heart breaking loss that many are mocking, which is sickening. R.I.P Heath, know that you may be gone, but you are never forgotten <33

    Liza,
No one was expecting “speculatory comments” on Mr. Ledger’s death, but a simple acknowledgment and condolences to Heath’s family would have done nicely.

    Kate,
I agree completely that she could have handled the situation a little more appropriately. Her response irritated me a bit as well, I just think that the statement caught her a bit off-guard is all, and unfortunately it was not thought by her to be important enough to continue the conversation. Let’s just hope that in the near future, she will do a very special memorial for him.
