Oprah Cuts Hilary Swank’s Hair

October 31, 2007 by Jeanne

hilary swank

On a show that will air on Friday, Oprah Winfrey cuts Oscar-winner, Hilary Swank’s hair for charity.

Swank, 33, is likely to end up with a short ‘do, as Winfrey reportedly cut some nine inches off her hair to donate it to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, an initiative dedicated to supporting and encouraging women who have lost their hair during cancer treatment.

“It’s taken months to get to this moment,” Winfrey says. “It involves a two-time Academy Award winner, a sharp object, and me.”

“I’ve been growing it for the last six months to donate my hair,” Swank says. “I’ve been taking a lot of vitamins and taking really good care of it, knowing that it would go to a woman in need.”

Also as part of Oprah’s Great American Haircut show, 100 viewers will get 100 makeovers in one hour.

Limit Bacon and Booze to Cut Cancer Risk?

October 31, 2007 by Jeanne

cancer risk

It seems that every day, there’s a new study with some information about cutting the risk of developing cancer. This one came from Good Morning America.

Guess what?

After five years of reviewing 7,000 medical studies, a team of top scientists from around the world has concluded that diet and weight directly affect whether you’ll get cancer.”

Yeah, that seems pretty obvious… Anyway, more interestingly, the researchers found that excess body fat is associated with the development of 6 different cancers including those affecting the breast, bowel and pancreas.

What else is linked to cancer?

  • Alcohol consumption
  • Red meat
  • Processed meat

Again, even scientists are saying this isn’t so shocking:

“It should come as no real surprise that excess body fat is associated with cancer, as one additional chronic disease associated with obesity, since many dietary factors that protect against cancer are probably absent in the diet of an overweight or obese person,” said Daniel Hoffman, assistant professor of nutritional sciences at Rutgers University in Newark, N.J.

Still, there are all kinds of debates going on (including how the use of tobacco products fits into this equation). You can also find more information at www.dietandcancerreport.org.

In the meantime, here are some guidelines:

  • Limit body fat. Your body mass index should be between 18.5 to 24.9. Weight around the waist is most dangerous.
  • Limit red meat to 2.5 ounces a day. An additional 1.7 ounces a day increases cancer risk by 15 percent. That means an 8 ounce steak or a quarter-pound hamburger would be the limit for a week.
  • Limit alcohol to two drinks a day for men, one drink a day for women.
  • Limit salt intake to 2 grams a day. That’s about a teaspoon a day, instead of the teaspoon and a half that most people eat. To give you an idea of how much salt is in food — just one cup of cottage cheese has half the salt you should eat in a day: half a teaspoon. Processed foods are almost always higher in salt.
  • Get nutrients from whole foods, not vitamin supplements.
  • Mothers should breast-feed children.

Gayle King Calls Oprah School Crisis “Heart Wrenching”

October 31, 2007 by Jeanne

oprah winfrey gayle king

Oprah Winfrey’s best friend, Gayle King, has commented on the allegations of abuse at O’s $46 million school-for-girls in South Africa.

“We’re definitely working on it,” King told People on Monday as she entered the G&P Cancer Research Foundation Angel Ball in New York City. “There is still an investigation. We’re trying to figure out what is real and what isn’t.”

Students have reportedly accused multiple school employees at the South African Leadership Academy of physical and verbal abuse – allegations which Winfrey tearfully addressed Monday.

“It’s just heart wrenching that the situation even happened. It really is,” said King, adding that the two traveled to the school twice in one week. In fact, “Heart wrenching doesn’t do it justice,” she said.

I didn’t even know that there was a real question that there was abuse so I’m glad to hear that they are trying to get to the bottom of this whole sad situation.

Early Show Host Finds Dead “SNLers” Funny

October 31, 2007 by Jeanne

Wow!!!! Talk about poor taste! Early Show host, Harry Smith, made a joke about David Spade being the only one still alive from a cast photo from Saturday Night Live. Okay, not only is that not true (Adam Sandler and Chris Rock are pictured, for example) it’s also not funny!

Two of the cast members were the late Phil Hartman and Chris Farley – both known to be good friends of Spade’s.
