Excuse me. Nooses are symbolic of lynching. But thousands of Whites and Asians were lynched in this country also. Blacks do not have a monopoly on “rope” or “nooses”. IF displaying a noose is a crime (which it isn’t) one does not respond with another crime. I want to point out that the nooses that were displayed on that tree were painted in the school colors. So why does the black community “claim” it? Also Mychal Bell was on probation for previous crimes.
The Jena 6 beat that boy up 3 months after the tree incident. And they locked the school doors to prevent entry or exit. They should get punished. No excuse. They should get expelled. There should be a lawsuit against the Jena 6 for violating the civil rights of Justin Barker.

John – I’m not disagreeing with you but I rarely think that things are just cut and dry. I think that crimes committed against the elderly and little children always include victims but I’m less eager to declare people blameless in most other situations. One can never know.
Do you think Justin is a complete victim? Do you think he his actions were completely blameless? I’m not saying that it justifies being beaten but I do think that there are plenty of gray areas in this case. What do you think?
I see how Dr. Phil was all over the blacks side of the show. Why didn’t he let the whites talk as much as the blacks? Oprah wouldn’t like that to well is why. The media as well as its figurine spokes persons are so bias against the white race it’s literally appalling.
Everyone agrees that on December 2nd of last year,
Justin Barker was attacked in school by a gang of six
to ten students, all of whom were black. Eyewitnesses
testify that one of the gang said, “There’s that white
motherfucker that was running his mouth.” Justin was
then punched from behind by football player Mychal
Bell. Court documents say he was probably unconscious
before he even hit the ground. It should be noted at
this point that Justin Barker was not one of the three
students disciplined for the noose incident. The
attack continued after he collapsed. Eyewitness
statements used phrases like “stomped him badly”,
“stepped on his face”, “knocked out cold on the
ground” and “slammed his head on the concrete beam”.
When Assistant Principal Gawan Burgess arrived on the
scene, Justin was bleeding from the ears and nose. He
showed no signs of life, and Burgess thought that he
was dead. Are attempted murder charges appropriate in
a case like this? I think that they are.
Much has been made of the fact that Justin attended a
class ring ceremony that night. Less has been made of
the fact that his eye was swollen shut for three
weeks, or that he suffered chronic migraines for six
months, or that his family was stuck with a $5467
emergency room bill. The media has minimized this
vicious, brutal attack as a “schoolyard brawl”. This
was not a simple case of “boys will be boys”, and
District Attorney Reed Walters is correct in saying
that Justin Barker has been reduced to a footnote.
Much has been made of the decision to try Mychal Bell
as an adult. In my opinion, Mychal Bell should have
been in adult prison before the events of December 2nd
ever occurred. At the time of his attack on Barker,
he had already been on juvenile probation for almost a
year. During that year, he was found guilty of three
other crimes. Two of those crimes were violent
offenses. Should a sixteen-year-old who commits four
violent crimes in one year be tried as an adult? I
believe that they should be.
Frankly, if this is the worst injustice that black
activists have to protest, then I think black America
is doing alright. Sorry guys, but no one has a civil
right to commit assault and battery. The students of
Jena High deserve to attend high school without being
racially intimidated. But more importantly, they
deserve classrooms where violence is not tolerated.
Justin Barker and his family deserve to know that they
are safe from his attackers. As for the rest of us,
we deserve a justice system that cannot be undermined
by people like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson

I am honestly angry about the whole situation. People seem to forget that racism goes BOTH ways not just whitey being mean to the black man. People like Rev. Sharpton only aggravate these types of situations by working people into a frenzy. The whole thing has been blown WAY out of proportion and I feel it’s probably going to get worse before it gets any better. The fact that some people want the kids who hung the nooses to be charged with hate crimes is beyond asanine to me. Ropes hung from a tree ARE symbolic but did they directly injure anyone? No. Did the kids who hung those nooses go hunt down a black boy and beat him nearly to death? No. It was a silent statement. Was it right? No, not at all. The fact that their punishment wasn’t televised is the ONLY bone the people like Sharpton have to pick at. When 6 white boys jump 1 black kid, it’s automatically a hate crime and a violation of civil rights and they get roasted alive but when something like what’s happened in Jena happens, it’s a TOTALLY different story. I honestly beleive that they SHOULD have been charged and punished for attempted murder. If the boy HAD died, then what? Would people still be parading screaming “Free the Jena Six?”. The whole situation leaves a foul taste in my mouth and the way Dr. Phil pretty much didn’t allow anyone with disagreeing views speak says alot. Even IF Justin DID say those things, does that JUSTIFY 6 boys beating him up like that? In my opinion, NO. White kids are supposed to tell a teacher or whatever when something like that happens. Why isn’t the same standard expected of black kids? Why is it everytime something like this happens the black kids are made out to be martyrs and oppressed when it’s CLEAR that they were WRONG? This case is just another example of the double standard held in the US in this day and age.
“Grey area?” 6 black thugs attack one white student, knock him out, and continue to beat and kick him in the head as he lies motionless on the ground. There’s no grey area there, that’s mob violence. Some say Justin isn’t blameless. What blame falls on him? He didn’t hang the stupid nooses, which by the way, were hung a full THREE MONTHS prior to the attack.
Think about it people: If 6 white kids had beat one black student in such a brutal manner, would any of you be talking about “grey areas?” I think not. Liars like Sharpton would be calling for the death penalty in such an instance.

Nothing can be said about this, except that this is just a perfect example of Black on White racism, that will never see justice, like the untold thousands of other cases similiar to this.
No one seems to report the entire story- just bits and pieces- this has been going on long before the tree incident and the latest incident the white boy getting beat– the fact remains that it was a school yard fight and the punishment for a school yard fight is not 20+ years in an adult prison- whether it is a one on one fight or a group fight- when the white boys jumped on the black boy almost a year and a half ago the punishment was 3 days out of school- when did the rules chane- if the fight would have been between all blacks or all whites we would have never heard about it because they would have been given 3 days out of school- just as the white students that beat the black student–whether the rope was a prank or not is not the issue here- the punishment for the blacks (being tried as adults) for attempted murder is rediculous–if you have not read the entire reporta and details of this tragic case- you will never understand.

It’s kind of interesting how everyone posting a message here is all about how the Jena 6 attacked and beat a white boy, and how the violent behavior of the Jena 6 should not be tolerated and how they deserve to go to jail. But it seems everyone has forgotten the incidents that happened before the attack that made the whole situation worse and in some cases lead to the attack. Some people are saying that the black people are telling a one-side story, but how about the white? Personally I think they are telling a one-side story as well.
First I have to say that the Jena 6’s aggressive behavior when they attacked the white boy is not right and it shouldn’t be tolerated and they should be punished. But trailed as an adult for 30 years in prison when the 3 boys hang Nooses’s only punishedment was transferred to another school and the white boy who pull a gun at the black boys got away with no punishement can’t be called justice either.
Second I think the problem started with the “white only” tree and the Nooses. You know how people are going to react when they hear about it. It’s like fat people don’t like to be called fat, even if you have the IQ of a 10 year old you should be able to figure out what will happen after that.
The white boy who got beaten didn’t deserve the attack but I have to say he should be punished more severely, and hang a Noose in the tree is not a prank, and I hope he and the other boys learned their lesson. I know he also suffered a lot because of the media’s exploser and I hope him and the Jena 6 will recover, solve this whole peoblem and move one with their life.

Amber, let me explain a simple concept to you. Americans are guaranteed freedom of speech by The Constitution, which is the final word in any court of law. Americans do not, however, have the right to beat someone half to death because they expressed an unpopular idea. “How are you going to hang nooses and not expect to get your ass beat” is nothing but your own ignorant opinion, and it holds no legal weight whatsoever.

Angry White Guy – I understand that you are upset over the situation in Jena. To a certain extent what happened to Justin was wrong. But if we are going to critisize anyone here, we should really stick to the facts. The whole situation from day one and not just what happened to Justin in December. We need to focus on the entire situation and how this violence escalated. Nooses were hung from what was known in that town for decades as a white only tree. In certain parts of this country there is an abundance of “hidden racism” if you will, and I speak from experience. I lived in a small southern town in Alabama for two years and saw with my own eyes the shady unspoken racism that goes on in the south and it is shameful BUT it is all people in these places know.
Someone said that black folks are “lucky” to be living in America. How is that? Really how is that possible that black people were “lucky” enough to be dragged from their homes and torn away from their families by white people and chained, shackled, and shipped to a country against their will and forced into a life of slavery, beatings, and death? How is that lucky? Then when they are set free, all of sudden white people are screaming “go back where you came from”. Black people didn’t buy a ticket to America. So, why are white people so angry at black people really. Is it really displaced anger, where they are really mad at their ancestors for bringing black Africans over here? Seriously to be mad at group of people for living in a country they did not choose to live in, but rather their (white folks) ancestor wanted them here for one reason or another is insane. If you really want to get to the niddy griddy we can go ALL the way back to when the WHITE man stole “America” from the Native Americans! This is really their land and to be honest, they would rather have people of color here than…what did they call them…the pale rider. I currently live in a part of the country that has a huge Native American presence and from talks with numerous Native Americans, they are not to fond of the “pale riders”lol.

Anyway my point in this is; one, we need to focus on the FACTS of the Jena six case and the WHOLE story not just one part. Both the white kids and the black kids are at fault in one way or another in this case and each should take responsibility for his or her part. The kids that hung the nooses should be punished. The kids and adults who beat up the black kids should be punished for what they did, and yes the Jena six should be punished for their role BUT each punishment should fit the crime. Attempted murder charges are a bit much. Understood that Mychel had prior battery charges but has anyone cared to know what the other “charges” were? Does anyone care that a drunk white man tried to pee on him and swung on him so when he defends himself, he gets charged. This whole situation is absolutley gross….the racism in Jena and all the other little small time racists towns in this country are gross as well.

Yeah, also keep in mind that this was Mychal Bell’s FOURTH violent criminal offense in one year. Previously to assaulting Barker, he was arrested for beating up a fifteen-year-old GIRL. His life is less than worthless, and he belongs in an adult prison.
Justin did not go to a “party” the night of his beating. He briefly attended a school function that couldn’t be postponed. He was in considerable pain, and left early. None of this justifies six retarded apes beating him unconscious.
I can see that how different news source has different story to tell. I can also understand that most of this problem is blow up by the media which can’t wait for some “major” story to report. Since none of us has even been to Jena, all of our information is from the media, which the reliability is not very high. However I can’t really trust the website you find me due to a few reasons.

This case has gotten so out of hand b/c everyone wants to blame everyone. The fact is, Justin got beat up by six boys and it seems that everyone is just so focused on that part of the situation. They are acting as if NOTHING happened that lead up to this event. Some people are not concerned that children were taught by their racist parents to hang nooses and they did. That is in fact a hate crime. Did any one of those black students deserve to come to school and be threatened in that way? Was it fair for the black students to get beat up by 22 year olds and nothing happened? If the colors were switched and a black kid was beaten up do you honestly think they would have been charged with attempted murder….sadly they would not have. Mike- Thank you you for clarifying what you meant. I can truely understand everyone’s passion in this case no matter what side they are on. It’s really just a shame that all of this is even happening. It is very unfortunate what has happened to ALL parties involved from day one. The misseducation of certain parts of society today has caused this situation to escalate to the extent that it has. All parties involved are at fault in one way or another. Granted certain aspects of this case are outragous and were totally uncalled for and I am not focusing on just the Jena six. As I have said before, it was wrong for six boys, no matter what color they are, to jump one individual. And for that they should indeed be punished in one way or another. But at the same time, everything that was done by each individual involved that lead up to this disgraceful situation, should be punished as well in one way or another.
We all can only hope that Jena can recover from all of this. it is more than 7 families that have been affected by this, the whole town of Jena has been affected.
Well I think that Justin Barker has certainly been punished enough for whatever role he played in this. I hope that Mychal Bell saw enough of what prison is like that he gets help for his anger management issues. It will be interesting to see what becomes to Jena at this point. Dr. Phil, What happened in the past that shows that whites have received no punishment for violence against blacks? If you would read The Jena Times, you would find that both races are “slapped on the hands” and receive suspended sentences for DWI, assult, domestic violence, and possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia. I believe the mix up is with everyone and their points of view. There are obviously 2 separate issues here. One issue is that Justin Barker was beaten by six students. The other issue is that gross punishment was given to Mychal Bell. The problem is that everyone continues to mix the 2 when in reality Justin had already gotten his justice. Mychal Bell spent time for his actions. Case closed. This has been taken to far. The other issue that has not been addressed as far as justice only is that Mychal Bell received to harsh of punishment for the offense. This still has not been resolved. Now the only way the 2 can be meshed in to one is if Justin Barker believes that Mychal Bell should be charged in such a harsh way. If this is the case then the arguments should continue but until then please treat them as 2 separate justices.

We know that in one of those earlier “ajudications” (juvenile justicese for “convictions”) the 5′-10″, 185 pound fullback /middle linebacker (100 yards rushing and 12 tackles per game as a junior) who was being recruited by mighty LSU, was found guilty of punching a 17 year old girl in the face.
Is anybody other than the original small town reporter Abbey Brown and sportswriter Jason Whitlock ever going to realize that this isn’t a story about poor oppressed sharecroppers getting lynched, it’s a story about football stars who were coddled for years, until they finally went too far, because small towns in the South are crazy about high school football?

You have a good point about football players. Whether they are black, white, or green it doesn’t matter b/c football players that are good on the field get away with so much. So after reading your comment, particularly the part about him being a football player and I finally found an article that brought out different facts for a change. Mychal has had prior convictions as we all know, but as Mike has said, Mychal got away with a lot b/c he was a good player for the high School team. In this article it seems at least on two or 3 of his past charges he was “adjudicated” b/c he won games for them shortly after each incident. At one point in this article, an authority figure said he did nothing b/c the school did nothing. If all this is true, who is really to blame here? Of course what these boys did to Justin was wrong but it seems as though there are also some flaws with the school for allowing his behavior to go unpunished, the parents (all involved), and of course all the students that were involved from day 1.
Most of us are pointing the finger to one side or the other and not really looking deep into the case. I think both sides of this case have some wrong-doing. It was wrong for 6 kids to beat up on one person, no matter what color they are. It is also wrong of Justin to have a gun on campus. It was wrong of the 3 students to hang the nooses. It was wrong of the school to overlook Mychal’s behavior/crimes just because he wins a few football games. Personally I really do’t think there are any innocent parties here. Everyone’s part has led up to this disaster.

Great point A’kyra… Like you said there is really no innocent party here. There are too many people arguing sides when there are so many different cases with as much validity as the next. The focus should be on each separate case. The school,the justice system,the parents,the nooses,Mychal Bell and Justin Barker. All cases valid. One big disaster.
